Breaking Dirt
At the core of this project lies Kalina’s volunteering experience at The Genneper Hoeve, a farm in the south of Eindhoven, which gave her a complete change of perspective in the way she saw clothing. Entering the space as a designer, her focus was on finding and solving problems farmers may encounter, but that was quickly replaced by a fascination for their carefree attitude towards their workwear. She realised she may have a lot to learn from them rather than them from her.

As a society, we tend to go over the top with our clothing, overconsuming and overspending, which in turn causes strain to maintain what we have purchased. We rarely experience the joy of letting go of the fear of getting dirty, which clothes are supposed to provide, and maybe it is not that difficult to change that!

Kalina is proposing a solution for volunteers like her who don’t necessarily own the right clothes to do outside work. A system based on the donation of old, unfitting, or even pieces of clothes, with a dedicated place set up at (any) farm, utilising “Reuse” as a method to battle the short life cycle clothes typically have. She designed a pattern for a bodysuit and sewed one out of gathered donated material, made to be adjustable and convenient for farm work and, most importantly, made to get dirty.
